Interview responses
Read the answers and transcripts as responses come in, see the takeaways, and export everything when you need it elsewhere.
Responses land on the interview card while people are still talking, and every finished conversation gets a short review so you can read what each person said without going through the whole transcript. Open the card to go through them, or ask Buildpad to do it with you.
Being reviewed
Buys candles as gifts and reads the label first
Burned by weak scent twice, now sticks to one brand
On the card
The card shows how the interview is doing at a glance.
- Seats: each person who starts the interview takes a seat on the card, newest first. The card holds seven, after which the last seat shows how many more there are, like "+4".
- Unread dot: a seat with a blue dot is a response nobody in the project has opened yet. Bars that move mean that person is in the conversation right now.
- The band: under the title the card says "Waiting for the first response", then "3 responses", with a "2 new" badge while there are unread ones.
Everything updates live for everyone in the project, so when Sam opens a response on their laptop, the dot disappears for you too.
The reader
Tap the card to open it. The band at the top shows the response count, the length, the language and the voice. Under it are two tabs and a Search responses field.
People
One row per person, newest first. A row shows the email they gave, or "Respondent 3" when they did not, with their status and, once reviewed, a one-line takeaway. Tap a row to open the person: the Answers, one block per objective in the order you set them, and the Transcript as a conversation between Interviewer and Respondent. A copy button next to the email saves retyping it. Opening a person marks the response read.
Answers
The same answers grouped the other way: one heading per objective, and under it what every person said about it. This is the tab for comparing people, and for spotting an objective that nobody had much to say about.
Scent first, then whether the jar looks good enough to leave out. Price only matters once both pass.
Goes back to the one brand that never tunnelled. Will not try a new one without a recommendation.
A gift candle that smelled of nothing once lit. She felt embarrassed in front of the person she gave it to.
Statuses
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| In progress | The person is in the conversation right now. |
| Being reviewed | The conversation is over and Buildpad is writing up the answers. |
| Completed | Buildpad covered the objectives and ended the conversation. The answers and the takeaway are ready. |
| Disqualified | The person did not match the screening, so Buildpad ended the interview early. |
| Abandoned | The person left before the end and their time ran out. Whatever they said is reviewed anyway. |
Takeaways and answers
Within a few minutes of a conversation ending, Buildpad reads the transcript and writes one answer per objective, using only what the person actually said. When part of an objective did not come up, the answer says so rather than guessing, and when what someone says does not match what they do, it points at the gap. It also writes the takeaway, a single line for the card: the one thing to remember about this person. The review is written in the interview's language.
Someone who opens the link and never says anything does not become a response. Their seat disappears once their time runs out.
Search and unread
Search responses filters the list by the email or label, the takeaway and the answers, on both tabs. When the card has unread responses, its menu gets a Mark all read item that clears the badge for everyone at once.
Going through responses with Buildpad
Nobody is emailed when an interview completes, so the card is where you notice new responses. The quickest way through them is to ask in the phase chat: "what did the interviews say?" Buildpad reads the reviewed responses, the unread ones or all of them, marks them read, tells you how many are still in progress, and talks through what they mean for the phase. What you decide together ends up on the canvas as notes and documents, the same as any other finding.
Tip
Ask Buildpad for the pattern, not the summary. "Which objective got the most contradictory answers?" or "who should we talk to again?" gets more out of a set of interviews than "summarize the responses".
Exporting
Open the card menu and choose Download:
- Answers is a CSV with one row per person: Date, Status, Email, Takeaway, and one column per objective. It opens cleanly in a spreadsheet.
- Transcripts is a text file with one block per person, each line marked Interviewer or Respondent.
The project export includes both files for every interview on the canvas.
Who can see responses
Everyone in the project sees responses as they arrive, the owner and every collaborator alike, and any of them can open, export or mark them read. If you share the canvas publicly, visitors can open every response too, transcript included, so think about that before publishing a canvas with interviews on it. See Collaboration for sharing.
Deleting an interview deletes its responses with it. Buildpad asks you to confirm when there are any, and there is no undo.
